The following equation roughly describes the relation between candela and lumens: Do not allow a retailer or a supplier cheat you into buying an expensive lighting device that has a higher lumens value but will not be suitable for your business needs.īoth the terms lumens and candela are generally used to measure the luminous efficacy of lighting devices used in industrial settings. In such cases, you will have to buy lighting devices after comparing their candela values. On the other hand, some of your employees may work with intricate devices and need overhead lights to shine directly on the objects they are working with. The greater the lumens value, the more will be the amount of light emitted by the device, and the larger will be the area that will be illuminated by it. ![]() In such cases, you will need to concentrate on the lumens value of a lighting device. For instance, you need to install lights in your office premises to illuminate the objects in an area, like corridors and storerooms, so that your employees can move around easily without bumping into things. ![]() Knowing about the difference between lumens and candela will help you choose the appropriate lighting device for your business premises. Why do You need to Know About the Difference Between Lumens and Candela? On the other hand, an incandescent light or a fluorescent light bulb has a low candela value but a high lumens value because it emits a greater amount of light spread over a larger area than the pencil torch. While buying a torch, you need not be concerned about its lumens value because you will only use this device to illuminate a very small area. The torch has a high candela value because its light is concentrated into a single point and is projected in a single direction as a high-intensity beam. The difference between lumens and candela can be better understood in the context of a comparison between a pencil torch and an incandescent or a fluorescent bulb. In this context it is worth mentioning that the term Maximum Beam Candlepower (MBCP) is often used to refer to the maximum intensity of the focused beam of light emitted usually from the center of the lighting device, which is usually the source, and projected in a single direction. The word candlepower was substituted with the term candela in 1948, and one candela is approximately equal to one candlepower produced by a candle of specific dimensions. But if the light emitted from this apparatus is narrowed and made to shine within a 20-degree beam, then its candela value will increase to 18,000.Ĭandela is also known as candlepower, and the reference is to those times when the candle was the primary source of illumination. For instance, a standard fluorescent lighting device that emits a wide-spread beam can have a rating of 1,700 lumens and 135 candelas. But the candela value of a lighting device is concerned primarily with a focused beam of light. The lumens unit does not consider the spread or divergence of the light being emitted by the device. On the other hand, candela refers to the amount of light emitted by a lighting device in a particular direction. The higher the lumens value of a lighting device, the greater is the area lighted up by it. Lumens refers to the total amount of light emitted by a lighting apparatus and is denoted by L. More importantly, this knowledge will ensure that you are not cheated by your lighting supplier who may try to convince you about the merits of a lighting device by quoting impressive lumens or candela numbers that are not relevant for your needs. Knowing about the difference between lumens and candela will help you choose lighting devices that suit the needs of your workplace. Police have violently broken up some of them. Therefore, we don't find the moral, emotional and political space to distance ourselves from the reality of social responsibility.ĪRI SHAPIRO: For several days now, protests have spread in Iran. The pain of the longing and the separation from your loved one and your family. If you're living outside, like me, you're faced with a life in exile. If you're living in Iran, you're facing censorship, harassment, arrest, torture, at times, execution. Every Iranian artist, in one form and another, is political. Politic doesn't seem to escape people like me. NESHAT: The story I wanted to share with you today is my challenge as an Iranian woman artist living in exile. ZOMORODI: Here's Shirin Neshat on the TED stage. And the female body is, like, a very potent, very controversial and problematic issue in my culture in Iran. But the other thing I've been very interested in is how the female body has been a contested space for political, religious and ideological rhetorics. We repressed all sense of desire, temptation. It was always connoted as a notion of sin, shame, guilt. And at least I know since my upbringing that I always had a problem with my body as a woman. NESHAT: You know, my work, for so long, has been focused on the female body in Islamic cultures. A quick warning - we discuss political violence and sexual assault but include no specific descriptions. ZOMORODI: Today on the show, the Iranian artist and TED speaker Shirin Neshat, how she became a world-renowned and controversial artist, combining photography with calligraphy and video, winning the award for best director at the Venice Film Festival and becoming a voice for Iranian and Muslim women, even though her art has never been shown in Iran. My name and the work that I make - it comes from me. I earned my freedom, and I earned the success that I brought to myself. And I'm very strong, and I'm very optimistic and I'm a survivor. But I was very lucky that I pulled myself out of this dark side. NESHAT: Those years became the foundation of the dark side of me. In fact, living in exile became the force that drove her work. ZOMORODI: And yet now, over 40 years later, Shirin Neshat is one of the most famous Iranian artists in the world, even though she never moved back. And so the last thing I could think of was my studies. And economically, I had to support myself. Mind you that this was the time I found out that I wasn't able to go back. ZOMORODI: So there she was, on her own in the U.S., her homeland in turmoil, studying art at UC Berkeley. NESHAT: I was supposed to go back, but the revolution happened. ZOMORODI: Because in 1979, while she was thousands of miles away, the Islamic Revolution began. ![]() ![]() NESHAT: I was sent to study abroad, and everything went wrong after that. ![]() ZOMORODI: But when she turned 17, her parents, like many Iranians who could afford it, wanted her to go to college in the U.S. NESHAT: My 17 years of living there in - it was very happy. SHIRIN NESHAT: I had a very happy childhood, and we had lived in a beautiful house with beautiful gardens. ![]() This seems to be true even if the skin is damaged, for example, sunburnt.Īll in all, if you've found a Zinc Oxide sunscreen that you are happy to use every single day, that's fantastic and we suggest you stick with it. But luckily, so far research shows that sunscreen nanoparticles are not absorbed but remain on the surface of the skin or in the uppermost (dead) layer of the skin. We wrote more about nanoparticles and the concerns around them here, but the gist is that if nanoparticles were absorbed into the skin that would be a reason for legitimate health concerns. Still, it's white and disturbing enough to use Zinc Oxide nanoparticles more and more often. Pinnell, it's slightly less white than TiO2. It leaves a disturbing whitish tint on the skin, although, according to a 2000 research paper by Dr. It's also often used to treat skin irritations such as diaper rash.Īs for the disadvantages, Zinc Oxide is also not cosmetically elegant. So much so that Zinc Oxide also counts as a skin protectant and anti-irritant. It's also highly stable and non-irritating. ![]() It protects against UVB, UVA II, and UVA I almost uniformly, and is considered to be the broadest range sunscreen available today. ![]() ![]() The first main difference is that while TiO2 gives a nice broad spectrum protection, Zinc Oxide has an even nicer and even broader spectrum protection. It's definitely one of the best UV-filter agents we have today, especially in the US where new-generation Tinosorb filters are not (yet) approved. The English translation is, so far it looks like sunscreens with nanoparticles do stay on the surface of the skin where they should be.Īll in all, Titanium Dioxide is a famous sunscreen agent and for good reason, it gives broad spectrum UV protection (best at UVB and UVA II), it's highly stable, and it has a good safety profile. A 2009 review article about the safety of nanoparticles summarizes this, "to date, in-vivo and in-vitro studies have not demonstrated percutaneous penetration of nanosized particles in titanium dioxide and zinc oxide sunscreens". But do not panic, these are concerns under investigation. Once absorbed they might form unwanted complexes with proteins and they might promote the formation of evil free radicals. The main concern with nanoparticles is that they are so tiny that they are absorbed into the skin more than we want them (ideally sunscreen should remain on the surface of the skin). The itsy-bitsy Nano-sized particles improve both spreadability and reduce the whitish tint a lot, but unfortunately, it also introduces new health concerns. The cosmetic industry is, of course, really trying to solve this problem and the best solution so far is using nanoparticles. Sunscreens containing Titanium Dioxide are often hard to spread on the skin and they leave a disturbing whitish tint. The disadvantage of Titanium Dioxide is that it's not cosmetically elegant, meaning it's a white, "unspreadable" mess. Regular sized Titanium Dioxide also has a great safety profile, it's non-irritating and is pretty much free from any health concerns (like estrogenic effect worries with some chemical filters). Its protection is very good between 290 - 350 nm (UVB and UVA II range), and less good at 350-400 nm (UVA I) range. Anyway, it doesn't matter if it reflects or absorbs, Titanium Dioxide is a pretty awesome sunscreen agent for two main reasons: it gives a nice broad spectrum coverage and it's highly stable. |
